"The first modern direct-pull electromagnetic lock was designed by Sumner "Irving" Saphirstein in 1969."

Fire concerns at the Montreal Forum led the task of finding a different type of locks to him. The problem with the old locks was that they took too long to open and in the case of a fire, it would be devastating. They needed a lock that still worked, but could be opened in a split second and thus the Electromagnetic lock was created. After a successful prototype Saphirstien founded his own company and continued to develop his locks. Now days many companies in the Electromagnetic industry, were derived from his.

How Do Electromagnetic Locks Work?

Electromagnetic locks are mainly focused on an electric magnet and an armature plate because these two things are the reason that the lock actually works. "An electromagnetic lock creates a magnetic field when energized or powered up, causing an electromagnet and armature plate to become attracted to each other strongly enough to keep a door from opening. As they require power to remain locked, this allows them to be fail-safe, making electromagnetic door locks safe for use as emergency exits. If the power was to go out in a fire via a fire relay or call button, the door would unlock, allowing people to exit the building."
