Electromagnets in Tape Recorders
by: Colette Gauthier
One significant application of electromagnetism is in tape recorders. The tape itself is made of plastic that is coated with ferromagnetic oxide powder, which means it can be magnetized by a magnetic field. The tape recorder, however, is where the electromagnets are located.
Usually made up of a tiny iron ring wrapped in wire, audio signals induce a magnetic field inside the ring when the a tape is recording. Essentially, the oxide "remembers" the flux in magnetism when you're recording, which ultimately creates the playback.
(Below is a picture of the head of a tape recorder, upon which the electromagnet functions.)
